The makers of anti-impotency drug Cialis are throwing another dice in the hefty game of marketing their product. The company is offering free samples of either Viagra or Levitra – their competing products, if the user is not satisfied with the product. ICOS, of Bothell, Washington, developed Cialis and co-markets it with Eli Lilly and Co. of Indianapolis.

This market jinx erupted in front of Lily ICOS after posting a ‘not-so-impressive’ sale across the US market. Cialis still remained the no. 2 drug in the strongly growing market for ED drugs. Recently Cialis overtook Viagra in the number of new prescription for ED problem. But sales are still below the Lily ICOS expectations after spending millions of dollars.

Cialis’ share of total new prescriptions in the Erectile Dysfunction (ED) market has been flat for the past three months and is still No. 2 behind market leader Viagra. Meantime, the entry of Cialis and Levitra — and all the associated marketing and publicity — has not grown the overall ED market to any significant degree. Total prescriptions, new and renewals, for all three ED drugs also are flat.

The free promo by Cialis makers is in a hope that Cialis users “will want to stick with it beyond the free trial,” according to Paul Clark, CEO of ICOS Corp.
